Backyard patio with seating area, garden, and swing

Kelvin Grove

This project located in the Calgary neighbourhood of Kelvin Grove was both a front and back yard landscape renovation. The homeowner was known to us as we had designed the landscape of their previous home. It was essential to craft a design that fulfilled their wish list and elevated the landscape to match the beauty of their new home.

After reviewing their input, the primary objectives for the backyard were identified as follows: creating privacy, adding a new shaded deck, incorporating additional seating areas, introducing a water feature, vegetable beds, and surrounding the entire area with lush, beautiful plantings.

As with all of our designs we start by providing the homeowner with options so they can visualize elements placed in various locations. We play with the size and materials of hardscape, various water features, and of course the size of plant beds.

Once the homeowners had chosen the layout we needed to narrow down the individual elements.  Composite was chosen for the deck with raised planters constructed in pressure treated wood and clad in horizonal tongue and groove cedar with under cap lighting.  The use of this raised planter meant railings were not required.  We were thrilled when the homeowner decided to replace the small water feature from the concepts with a pond in the final drawing.

A swing was placed in the landscape to provide a hideaway for kids to read. Artificial turf was chosen over natural lawn and a screen was installed to provide privacy. This is favored style of screen we have used in many projects.

As mentioned, the front yard also saw a renovation with new raised planters, another sitting area and water feature.  The landscape truly  does reflect the same level of functionality and beauty of their new home.
