Backyard seating area

Sunnyside

This Calgary inner city infill in the beloved neighbourhood of Sunnyside included both the very small front and back yards. The homeowners wish list for the front yard included no lawn and plantings to extend onto city property on the boulevard realizing that the city had the right to dig the plantings up should they require access to services.

In the back yard the wish was to extend living space for the summer months, outside. An area for dining and cooking and a sitting area to retreat to were top of mind. Remaining space would include minimal but strategic plantings.

The 3 concepts provided, took these elements and showcased them in different ways.

In the end the home was transformed by painting the exterior a blue that a decade later still stands the test of time. The front yard saw the addition of raised planters for annuals. The boulevard plantings were included and a walkway along the street allowed for easy unloading from a parked car on the street. This was a great homeowner's idea.

The backyard evolved into a 2 tiered, multi level deck separated by a raised planter for annuals echoing the front yard. Access to both the front yard and to the garage man door at the rear detached garage were maintained. A pergola was installed on the upper level and by the homeowners request was modified to include a louvered roof. This feature allowed them to close the roof and enjoy the outdoor room despite a summer rainstorm.

Decking and raised planters, both front and back, were built in sustainably harvested, exotic hardwood. This is a product that can either be oiled on a yearly basis to keep its colour or allowed to age to a maintenance free silver patina.

Even tiny yards, with good design can be so functional and beautiful.
