Retaining Wall Boulders and Plants

Priddis

This project is located outside of Calgary in the community of Priddis. Priddis is home to large lots surrounded by aspen, spruce, pine tree as well as bears and deer. Oh My! The homeowners reached out to discuss their landscape after contracting a pool installer to price out a 30’ x 15’ pool. They contracted our services to determine the best placement for the pool as well as a plan for the rest of the landscape.  Their land is beautiful but the only space they had to pull up a chair was on the raised deck, essentially cutting them off from being in the landscape. Their wish list was for an additional sitting area off the lower patio doors, a hot tub, a fireplace, plantings, a place for the trampoline, address the storage areas under the raised deck, and finally a pool and pool house.

The concepts provided various options for the placement or orientation of these elements. There also was a fairly large slope that needed to be addressed as well as how the upper and lower levels would be accessed. The storage area under the deck was huge but sectioned into different levels due to the slope of the yard. It was easier to section these areas off so that different levels could be screened in with rolling doors. The hot tub was placed near the lower patio doors as this provided easy access in winter.

With the layout of the pool, pool house, trampoline, and patio decided, the elements to enclose and provide privacy were added. A screen was added to separate the hot tub from the storage area. Large screens were placed between the pool deck and the driveway garage entrance, and a few trees were planted to provide additional privacy. The raised deck ended about 10 feet from the end of the house and looked odd so a pergola attached to the house was added. The fireplace the homeowners had first wanted was eliminated from the plan due to cost. Instead, a gas fire table was substituted. Of course, plant material was added to soften all of the hardscape. Access to the upper level was achieved using natural rock steps.

In the end the project provided the homeowners with a landscape both beautiful and fun for the whole family with natural materials that conformed with the natural beauty of Priddis.
